Season of the Dev launched last Saturday with a Community Day at the University of the Sunshine Coast with events including a live performance by Tuberz McGee and a screening of 8 Bit Domination, a short doco directed by yours truly.
The program is a collaborative effort between Screen Queensland, Jobs Queensland, and Essential Screen Skills and runs from March to May. It targets young adults at the start of their game dev career. The aim to create accessible and affordable opportunities to launch their careers with up-to-date skills.
Since 2022, Queensland's digital game development sector has grown by 50% and now employs over 660 people full time. More than 50 titles have received funding from Screen Queensland in the past three years including Carmen Sandiego by Gameloft Brisbane, best-seller Max Mustard by Toast Interactive, and the award-winning Bears in Space by Broadside Games.
8 Bit Domination was one of my film school graduate films in 2018, along with award-winning shorts Arthur, Blessed, The Underdog, and Prey. We thought it had had its day, so it's always a brilliant feeling to see it find new audiences and appreciation! I may have to look into distributing it properly now haha
